Porsche 996 Sports Exhaust Installation
Porsche 996 Sports Exhaust Upgrade
This Porsche 996 Carrera 4 came into the workshop for the installation of a new sports exhaust system, including replacement manifolds and exhaust components.
What should have been a relatively straightforward exhaust upgrade became a much more involved job once work began.
The Problem – Seized & Snapped Manifold Bolts
When removing the original exhaust manifolds, the existing manifold fixings were found to be heavily corroded. Unfortunately, the manifold bolts snapped during removal — a problem that can occur on older Porsche 996 models due to years of heat cycles, corrosion and exposure underneath the vehicle.
With the original manifolds removed, the broken studs had to be carefully dealt with before the new exhaust system could be installed correctly.
This added considerably more work to the job, but dealing with seized and broken exhaust hardware properly is essential. Simply fitting the new components without resolving the damaged fixings wasn’t an option.
New Sports Exhaust System
Once the manifold issue had been overcome, the new stainless-steel sports exhaust components could be fitted.
The upgrade included new exhaust manifolds and sports exhaust sections, replacing the ageing original components and giving the 996 a much fresher exhaust setup.
New gaskets and fixings were used during installation before the complete system was checked and secured.
The Result
Despite the unexpected complication with the manifold bolts, the Porsche left the workshop with its new sports exhaust system successfully installed.
The result is a worthwhile upgrade for the 996, replacing heavily aged original exhaust components with a new stainless-steel system while retaining the character of the flat-six engine.
